“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” –Hebrews 13:16

The past few days students all over Oklahoma have returned to the classroom. Long before school starts back up, teachers have been working hard to prepare their rooms for the arrival of their new students. As my family was returning to school this week I was reminded of a wonderful story of kindness that was shared with me.

Joan is a family friend and a former co-teacher with my wife. She shared a story that reminded me of the impact that kindness can have on a person. As you know, teaching is a demanding profession. Teachers work countless hours both in the classroom and beyond the classroom, long before the students ever arrive for instruction.  Teachers are often found working late hours preparing their lessons and their classrooms to enrich the lives of their students.

Our friend, Joan is one of these hard working teachers.  She spends hours of her time and resources to make her students’ classroom experience as good as it possibly can be. Joan was in Staples picking up some things she had printed for her classroom. A lady, who was a stranger to Joan, asked her if she was a teacher.  Joan told her that she was a 2nd grade teacher in town.    This stranger then said,  “I bet you are paying for all of this out of your own pocket.”  Joan replied, “Yes, I am, but it’s OK, because I know it will make my students happy.”

The cashier at the print shop began to ring them up when Joan’s new acquaintance said, “I will be paying for her stuff, as well.”   Joan was surprised. It was beautiful surprise that not only brightened Joan’s day, but also will, without a doubt, enrich the lives of her students.

This unexpected gift was a blessing to Joan.  When I heard about Joan’s encounter with a stranger, I was reminded that each of us has the opportunity to make a person’s day.  When we give of our time and our resources, we undoubtedly, bless the lives of others.  When we offer words of encouragement we lift the spirits of those around us.  It is a joy to receive kindness.  It is a gift to offer kindness to others.
