I am so excited about our current sermon series, Heading for Home. We are looking at the life of Peter following the Resurrection of Christ, to see how the disciple kept redefining his life. He would become a leader of the early church and lead thousands to become part of the family of faith. That is exciting in and of itself, but I am really enjoying the stories that are being used to illustrate the lessons that Peter discovered along the way. Many of them are baseball stories – Bob shared the story of Joe Nuxhall this past Sunday. When I was a young girl I remember hearing Joe Nuxhall and Marty Brennaman call the Cincinnati Reds games on the radio at my grandparent’s home. While I prefer to watch baseball games in person, I have to admit, hearing the sound of the bat hit the ball on AM radio still leaves me very nostalgic. I would hear the famous words of Joe Nuxhall at the close of a game, This is the ‘ole left-hander, rounding third and heading for home. Joe Nuxhall wasn’t meaning that things were over – he was still a part of the game. He was a part of the Reds for 60 years and did as much for the community as he did for the sport.
I love the idea that we are called to stay in the game and give our very best. We should never give up. Each and every one of us can make a difference – but only if we keep living and making the most of every day.
Today – this very moment – is a gift to you. What will you do with it?
