Tom Miller led discussion from Judges 11.  The people of Israel fell into a now predictable pattern of obeying God; then losing faith by worshiping other gods; then having their enemies take advantage of their weaknesses and being conquered.  The Israelites would then turn to God to send a military leader (a judge) to free themselves from their oppressors.

However, on the seventh time they confessed to God their sins of serving Baal and requesting help God refused to rescue them!  After the people exited their foreign gods the Lord finally recognized their suffering and relented.

The Gileadite rulers turned to Jephthah, the half – brother who they had shunned and was now a successful outlaw leader.  They begged for his return.  He agreed ONLY IF they offered him respect AND granted him sole leadership.

Jephthah bargained with God for military success by offering sacrifice of the first one who greeted him on his return from battles.  Unfortunately, that person was his only child, a daughter!  After Jephthah honored his vow, he served Israel for six years, in spite of his personal loss.  The study author emphasized that people who disagree can still work together to accomplish common goals.
