Luther Trent led our class again this morning in a study of Galatians. Galatia is what is now Turkey and it was divided into a northern and southern region. It’s thought that Paul’s letters were written to churches he had started in the south.
He starts the letter by defending his discipleship which was being challenged by agitators. Paul was mad at the Galatians and mad at the agitators. Prior to this letter, there had been a conference in Jerusalem with Peter, James (brother of Jesus), Paul, Barnabas, Titus and others where they decided Gentiles did not have to follow Jewish law to become a Christian. There were a few guidelines they felt were important but the agitators were still preaching that Gentiles had to follow Jewish law to become a Christian. This did not set well with Paul and the letters to the Galatians were the result of his displeasure. We’ll continue this study next week.
