“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” – Hebrews 13:16
No fisherman expects to have to call the fire department after a quick trip to the neighborhood pond, but that is exactly what happened to a Kansas City fisherman. A local veteran left his home on his motorized wheelchair to spend some time fishing. When he arrived at the pond, he became stuck on the uneven ground. He did all he could to free his electric chair from the rut.
Thankfully, the stranded fisherman was spotted by some neighbors who came to his rescue. They worked and worked but were not able to free the chair. Eventually, they called the fire department to come and help. When they arrived, the firemen were able to lift the chair free. Unfortunately, in the many attempts to move the motorized chair, the battery was depleted. No longer stuck, the veteran was still stranded.
The fire department stayed with the fisherman and his chair. They began the difficult work of helping him home. Using what little power the chair had left, the fire crew began to take turns pushing the chair until the stranded fisherman was safely home.
If we are honest, we all understand that there are times in life when we are unable to make it on our own. We become stuck in moments of pain, trials overwhelm us, and we often find it difficult to move forward. With the help of others, we can gain traction in life. There are also times when we are blessed to be able to help others. God has given us the gift of community. When we help each other, we live a life that express the heart of our faith. When we care for one another, we bring joy to ourselves and to God.
