“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39
A car crash is a traumatic event for all who are involved. It is a sudden, unexpected moment that takes your breath away. When two cars collide, it stops the world, if for just a moment. When two vehicles were traveling late at night in Billings, Montana, their plans were interrupted. The unforeseen collision caused fire, ambulance, police and two trucks to be dispatched. Two families were suddenly found standing on the side of the street in disbelief.
During all the chaos, there was a young girl who was a part of the accident. She was checked out and was fine. She was now standing and watching as her parents were interviewed by police. A firefighter noticed the young girl as she stood there scared. He went to the fire truck and got out a book. He asked her if she would like to read with him. They sat on the curb and got lost in a good book. It was a wonderful thing to help take her mind off the accident. During this time, the young girl was able to calm down and allow her parents the ability to focus.
Many people in the crowd began to take notice of the special moment being shared by the young girl and this firefighter. This incredible act of compassion brought a moment of beauty to this terrible accident. A little life was disturbed with a big wreck, but soon a moment of peace would happen, even as the lights of the emergency vehicles were still flashing. This is not what most paramedics and firefighters train for. However, this wonderful action was heroic, nonetheless.
There are so many moments in our lives that are unexpected. Some of these moments are experiences that are deeply troubling. Our friends, our family, and our neighbors all experience unexpected trials. We can bring peace to those moments when we are willing, like this wonderful firefighter, to come alongside and be a presence of someone who cares. One of the most comforting truths found in the Bible is that we are not alone. The Apostle Paul writes, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39) There is no greater comfort than to know God is with us. As God’s children, we are called to love the same as God loves us. We sit down with those in need and provide a presence of peace and love.
