What color are your eyes? Mine are green. Did you know that green is the rarest eye color? A mere 9% of the US population has green eyes. Brown is the most prevalent eye color in the US (45%), with blue being next (27%). Only 18% of the US population has hazel eyes. Whatever our eye color, we can all agree that our eyes are important to us!

In Luke chapter 24:13-35, we read the story of the two men who were walking to Emmaus, and then joined by Jesus. It says in verse 16, “but they were kept from recognizing him.” Jesus was right there with them, but they didn’t know it was him!

Have you ever been in a situation where something was right in front of you, but you didn’t realize what was happening? I certainly have! When I look back on some of these times, I wonder why my eyes weren’t opened to see what was happening. But then, I look at how the situations unfolded, and I understand why I God didn’t make me aware of everything at the time! He had these situations under control, and I had no need to worry about them or try to solve the problems myself. Romans 8:28 tells us, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

These two men on the road to Emmaus had knowledge of something horrific; the crucifixion of the One who they hoped was going to redeem Israel. They thought they knew the end of the story, but God had another plan. He had everything under control!

Does your life seem chaotic at times? Do you feel like you’re in the dark? Do you wish you could control people and situations? If so, you’re not alone. But we can take comfort in knowing that when we don’t know everything and can’t handle everything, we know the one who does!! God can take care of these people and situations without our help. He wants only good for His people.

What can we do? We can continue to share His love with others and worship Him. We can continue to grow in our faith by studying His Word. We can continue to serve others, as Jesus served!

When the two men invited Jesus to stay with them, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him when He broke the bread. Like these men, God will open our eyes when the time is right. Until then, we can trust our loving and faithful God…even in the dark!
