While working from home, I’ve had the pleasure of doing several different things that I don’t normally get to do while working full-time in my office. One thing I’ve enjoyed most has been helping with the mobile food truck.  This meal program was a collaboration between St. Luke’s and over 20 local restaurants, as well as OG&E and Bank of Oklahoma. By working together, we have served thousands and thousands of meals during this pandemic to multiple neighborhoods around the metro.  I’ve had the privilege of helping load the truck with produce and assisting with food distribution at different locations.

Last week, I met a sweet, kind, outgoing soul named Tamita.  Ms. Tamita was announcing to her neighbors that she was going to be making hot dogs and inviting them to come by and grab some food.  Keep in mind, most of these people were strangers to her; they were people at the mobile meals truck stop who were picking up food for their families.  Ms. Tamita knew many people needed food, and she was trying to do her part to help meet that need.  She was out and about, helping as needed and telling others who could benefit from the truck that we were there. She also was taking food to her neighbors who were homebound.

As I watched Ms. Tamita help those around her, both friends and strangers, I almost forgot that we were in the middle of a pandemic.  By the end of our shift in her neighborhood, we were all gathered in her front yard and she was serving everyone the absolute best Kool-Aid I’ve ever had!

In times like these, when things are unknown and we’re just trying to make it through another day, we need to remember that the world needs more Ms. Tamita’s.

Prayer: Holy God, help me be a light in the darkness for others and unselfishly put their needs before my own.  Make me willing to look past my own struggles and bring joy to others; even if it’s by sharing something like a cup of Kool-Aid.  Amen.
