Today was day three at the Methodist School. This morning we welcomed the Pre-K and Kindergarten students to our VBS group. At the Methodist School they call these students their “termites” because they all wear brown uniforms that resemble little bugs (they really mean this in a much more endearing way than it sounds at first)!
We continued teaching them about the love of God and the importance of sharing kindness with others as we taught them the Ten Commandments. It seems like these children are really having a great time, and more importantly, are feeling like they are loved and cared for. The kids are really getting to know us and are getting more comfortable with us. They love to tell us about their family, their favorite things to do, and they especially love giving big hugs at the end of VBS!
Today was report card day for students so class was a little different because of that. On the days when grades come out many of the students don’t have to come to school and classes are let out for the day. However, we were thrilled to see that almost all of the students we have been tutoring still showed up today when they didn’t have to just to come see us and get some more tutoring! It was a very affirming moment for our group that what we are doing really is making a different to these teenagers.
While all of this was going on we continued making progress on our playground construction. We put up most of the handrails, bolted the frame together, got the rafters and half the decking put on the roof, and assembled the monkey bars so they are ready to go up tomorrow. The kids are so excited about their new playground! It is really amazing to see something that we might often take for granted, like a playground, mean so much to these children.
It has been awesome to see how God has been at work this week and we are grateful for all of your prayers and support. We truly feel like we are sharing God’s love and bringing hope to the people of Honduras! Take a look at some of the pictures from the day below. Tomorrow will be our last full day of work at the Methodist School and we are looking forward to finishing up our projects, but are also dreading having to say goodbye to the students. Check back tomorrow for more!
