Dinner at our house is always a spirited time. Our family’s schedule, like so many families, is very busy. Just getting the meal prepared, something that everyone will possible eat, and getting all of us to sit down at the table is somewhat a miracle in itself!

When my family finally gathers at the table, one thing always happens. Our daughters begin to argue who will be the one to say Grace. (To be honest we usually say Grace at least twice so feelings don’t get hurt).

The prayer that is most often spoken at our table is one that our daughters have learned at the Children’s Center at St. Luke’s. It is so simple, yet so powerful.

God is gracious.
God is good.
Let us thank Him for our food. – Amen

Our first encounter with this prayer was when our middle daughter, Mary Beth, brought it home to us from Mrs. Mary’s classroom. Mary Beth was eager to pray and we were excited to let her pray with us. We quickly learned that she ended her prayer just the way Mrs. Mary ended it…”Amen. Now, you may eat.” Several years later, we find ourselves ending our prayers with the phrase, “Amen. Now, you may eat.”

When my daughters offer this sweet prayer of thanksgiving I am reminded how important it is to stop and be thankful for all that God has given us. Saying Grace at the beginning of each meal serves as an important reminder that we have been blessed by God. When we express our gratitude it truly helps us to, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Now, you may eat.)
