If you’ve ever seen the episodes of Friends where neat freak Monica’s messy, catch all closet is discovered, you’ll understand what I mean when I say I have a “Monica Closet.” It is a closet whose door always remains closed for no one outside to see. The inside is a cluttered, chaotic mess of used, unsorted items filled from top to bottom. I wouldn’t want anyone to open it for fear the contents would come tumbling out all at once.
Our family used to watch Let’s Make a Deal on TV. The show’s premise was the host would give the player an item that was of some value. He then gave the player the option to keep that item of value or trade it for something behind one of three doors. The player did not know what was behind each door. It could be something more valuable or a Zonk that had little or no value to the player.
As we journey through the hurts, failures and raw deals of life, our heart gets cluttered, traded, and/or zonked. We close the door to our heart in fear that others might see the cluttered, chaotic mess. We forget our value, our worth. We become afraid or ashamed to fully open the door and leave it open.
During this Advent season, I invite you to open a door. Not a cardboard door but a door – the one to your heart. Open it to embrace the hope revealed in a baby born into a messy, cluttered, chaotic world. Open it to feel the love of your Creator who proved your worth revealed in the sending of His son for you. Just as I waited in anticipation as a little girl to open the door on the Advent calendar, I am reminded He is waiting in anticipation to be invited into the door of my heart.
