Friday nights, under the lights, is a magical experience. High school football teams line up to compete. Fans fill the stands with the excitement of watching a big game. Cheerleaders and Pom squads take to the sidelines, ready to lead with great enthusiasm. The music and much of the entertainment is provided by the marching bands.
The students who are part of these teams spend hours on practice, training, and rehearsals. The football teams work out all year long, in preparation for each game. The cheer and pom squads practice and practice to make each performance as perfect as possible. The marching band takes years of learning musical instruments to the point of being able to march a routine while making music. Each event brings great joy to the students, coaches, and parents, as the games begin on Friday nights.
So many students want to participate in these extra-curricular activities. Casey Hubbard is one of those students. His desire is to perform with Southmoore High School Band. Casey has been playing trumpet since the seventh grade. He worked hard to learn his instrument. When he arrived in High School, he wanted to join the marching band. The big obstacle for Casey is that he is in a wheelchair.
Adam Mewhorter is the Band Director for Southmoore. He knew Casey’s dream of playing in the band and he saw the challenge Casey was facing. Both Casey and Adam were willing to work to make Casey’s dream a reality. For three seasons now, Casey and Adam have been a team. A real dynamic duo. While Casey plays his trumpet, Adam Mewhorter pushes Casey across the turf. It is truly a wonderful sight to see, under the big lights.
The Southmoore band has had a great year, even competing in a national competition in St. Louis. Casey and Adam were there, right in the middle of the show. This is all possible because Casey and Adam did not focus on limitations, but rather on possibilities. As the band would rehearse and Adam and Casey would work out their part of the routine, they constantly worked on how to make each moment a success. They are a powerful example of determination, creativity, and teamwork.
When we are willing to work with others – when we are willing to look past potential obstacles and use our imagination to overcome – there are few, if any limitations to what we can accomplish. Adam and Casey created more than just another spot for a trumpet player on the field. They helped to create a show that brought joy as people watched and listened. I hope that Casey and Adam will inspire you as they have inspired so many this year. Their hard work and dedication remind us that our dreams are possible with hard work, good partners, and dedication.
