I was looking through some of my pictures and came across this one from a year ago; it still brings a smile to my face. It is a picture of the ceiling in my bathroom. One morning I was getting ready for work and just happened to look up and see this sight. It is the projectile from a Nerf gun that is stuck on the ceiling because of the suction cup. Obviously, some unknown (or perhaps, known) member of my household was shooting a Nerf gun with all of its fun, harmless darts – and one was left behind. Whether it was on purpose, or simply couldn’t be retrieved – didn’t matter to me. I was glad to see it.
Too often in life we try to have everything “just so”. We want things to be perfect. But every now and then we come across a Nerf dart to remind us that some of the best things in life don¹t always belong. Spontaneity and fun are not always at home in perfectly manicured and scheduled lives. I am all for order and schedules, but they have never made me smile the way discovering a remnant of my child¹s imagination does.
And so, today – while you are crossing things off of your to do list, while you are arranging your schedule for tomorrow, or straightening up at home – make time for fun. Look up and see the Nerf darts on the ceiling and if they aren’t there, make sure to put them there for someone else to find.
