In the last few months our country has witnessed and endured several significant natural disasters. Tornadoes, hurricanes and wildfires have touched much of our geography. After these events devastated many areas, people began to rebuild their lives. For some, it was back to life as usual. For many others who lost their homes, and their belongings- they also any sense of normal.
The police department in Santa Rosa, California wanted to help people find a sense of normal, to give them something to celebrate. The officers had helped in the evacuations as some of the largest wildfires in California swept through. They wanted to help reconnect families and bring back things to normal, as best as they could. To help, the officers decided to help the families, who had lost so much, enjoy Halloween night. The Santa Rosa Police put out a call for donations for costumes for the children who had lost everything.
It turns out that the Santa Rosa Police were not alone in wanting to serve the people affected by the wildfires. Halloween costumes were shipped in from all over the world. They collected over 1,000 costumes. They organized a giveaway and local groups came and handed out candy while kids dug through to find the perfect costume.
There was a lot of sadness and loss with the California wildfires. Homes and business were lost and farms were destroyed. Thankfully, people like the Santa Rosa Police, are willing to help restore the lives of those who have been affected.
I am thankful for the work of the Santa Rosa police. They have reminded me that even though events, such as wildfires, can be devastating we can bring joy to others despite our circumstances. When we are willing to serve others, during pain and sorrow, and reach out to them in their moments of loss and sadness we may brighten their days. We can help lift their spirits and bring joy in the midst of destruction. We can be instruments of healing amid damage. When we see need we are called to serve. With God’s help and grace, we are truly capable of making a difference and bringing joy to so many!
