There is no doubt that parts of the Old Testament can be difficult to read or understand. Some question whether ancient texts have any value for today’s world. But the Old Testament is the scripture that Jesus taught from and is full of wisdom for us. It is made up of scriptures that inspire, educate, challenge, and transform. Join Bob and Wendy as they explore God’s message in the Old Testament.
Bob has been the Senior Pastor at St. Luke’s for 32 years. He has been pastoring since the age of 19 and recently celebrated 50 years of ministry. Bob and his wife, Marsha, grew up in Houston and met in the youth group while attending First United Methodist Church. They have two married children, daughter Kelly and husband Andy, and son Paul and wife Christa. They are also proud grandparents to six grandchildren.
Wendy was born in Dayton, Ohio but claims Oklahoma as her home state! She received her Masters in Physical Therapy from the University of Nebraska and practiced physical therapy before being called into ministry. Wendy received her Masters in Divinity from Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. Wendy is married to Chris Lambert and they have two adult children, daughter Hannah, and son Brooks.
8 Stories You Need to Know
Rev. Keith King | Room 205 | 6:30 p.m.
The Bible contains the great stories of our faith. They have been recorded to remind us about the work of God in the world. These stories are there to teach us and inspire us. This class will look at eight significant stories, found in both the Old and New Testaments, that every person of faith should encounter. Within these stories are foundational understandings of who God is and the work of God in our world. Join us as we study the ancient scripture that tells us about a God who is currently at work in our world.
Keith is a native of Lawton and attended seminary at the Perkins School of Theology, SMU. He is happily married to his wife, Aimee, for 22 years. Like Keith, Aimee is a Cameron University graduate and an Elementary School Instructional Coach. They have three daughters, Ella Kate, Mary Beth, and Molly Anne.
Sermon on the Mount for Dummies
Rev. Dave Poteet | Room 130 | 6:30 p.m.
The most profound teachings of Jesus all packed together in three chapters found in the Gospel of Matthew. We call it the Sermon on the Mount. Can it still speak to us today? Jesus provides us a roadmap for how God expects us to live our lives as believers. Dr. Amy-Jill Levine helps to lead us in this study that will challenge us as no other passage in the Bible can.
Dave is the Pastor of Congregational Care at St. Luke’s and has served St. Luke’s twice during his ministry. He served for five years at St. Luke’s after graduation from Perkins School of Theology, then helped plant Bridgeview UMC in Norman in 2000 and returned to St. Luke’s in 2010. Jesus in Jerusalem: His First and Last Days in Judea
Chris Lambert | Vaught Chapel | 6:30 p.m.
St. Jerome said, “Five gospels record the life of Jesus. Four you will find in books and one you will find in the land they call Holy. Read the fifth gospel and the world of the four will open to you.”
Many of us grew up with what author Philip Yancey described as the flannelgraph Jesus; a man possessing an eternal smile stuck in a pastoral panorama of green and blue felt. His disciples, assorted animals, and even the Pharisees look peaceful and happy. In reality, Israel was a powder keg of Jewish sects fighting with one another and all chafing at their Roman occupiers. In this class, we’ll look beyond Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to some of the apocryphal stories of Mary, to Jesus’ annual pilgrimages to the various feasts in Jerusalem, and on to Passion Week. Did the Last Supper, Jesus’ arrest, a religious trial followed by his political trial, flogging and crucifixion all take place between Thursday night and 9 a.m. Friday morning? Or might He have followed the Essene calendar and celebrated Passover on Tuesday? Join us as we walk the dusty streets of ancient Jerusalem and prepare our hearts for Easter.
Chris is the director of Meals on Wheels at St. Luke’s and plays bass guitar in the Edmond LifeLight band. He is married to Wendy Lambert and they have two adult children, Hannah and Brooks.
