Each Sunday at St. Luke’s on Broadway, talented guest performers bring songs from beloved musicals to life in our worship space, while Senior Pastor Dr. Bob Long draws out the spiritual threads woven into each story. This week is one that’s personal for Oklahoma.
On August 9, St. Luke’s on Broadway heads back to 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma — and a story about belonging that still hits close to home. The Outsiders, A New Musical — winner of four Tony Awards, including Best Musical is set in Tulsa. And its themes of belonging, identity, and the longing to be truly known speak to something universal in all of us.
Ponyboy’s story is one for the ages, and this Sunday, it becomes part of ours. Bring a friend and stay gold.
About The Outsiders, A New Musical
Tulsa, Oklahoma. 1967. Fourteen-year-old Ponyboy Curtis and his best friend Johnny Cade belong to the Greasers — a tight-knit group of young men from the wrong side of the tracks who are constantly at odds with their wealthier rivals, the Socs.
Adapted from S.E. Hinton’s beloved novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, The Outsiders follows a group of young people who are told, in a hundred ways, that they don’t belong. But within their own found family, they discover something the world around them never offered: genuine love, fierce loyalty, and the belief that there is still “lots of good in the world.”
