Every Sunday for two and a half years, a team of dedicated volunteers have worked to transform a middle school cafeteria into a place of worship for the St. Luke’s Edmond campus! The time has come to move into a new building and with the celebration of the grand opening set for Sunday, October 16, I can’t help but reflect!
Just three things I want to share as we approach the grand opening of the new home for St. Luke’s Edmond!
#1:
Anyone who has attended a worship service at St. Luke’s Edmond in Sequoyah Middle School can tell you there is something special about it. I’ve heard countless stories about the presence of the Holy Spirit in this middle school cafeteria! The bible tells us that where two or more gather in my name, there am I (Matthew 18:20). There is power in the collective group. It is important for us to have our own personal faith journey and we talk a lot about this at St. Luke’s. I believe it is equally important to be a part of a collective group that comes together to lift one another up and offer thanks to God, our ultimate provider.
#2:
Church isn’t just a building or a place to go, it’s a support system to love on one another during life’s best and worst moments. It’s about meeting the needs of the community and sharing God’s love and bringing hope to those around us. I told you earlier about the volunteers who have been helping turn a middle school cafeteria into church each week, helping set up, tear down, welcome visitors, and teach children. These hard working volunteers may agree, that while it’s not all about the building, it will certainly help attract more families! It is in this very special building where countless life moments will take place, from weddings and baptisms to funerals and everything in between. It will also be a place to serve the community and take care of others in so many ways.
#3
And finally, there is something so special about being a part of something from the beginning. I know there are many who will cherish their memories of those first days in the middle school cafeteria where it all began! It really is a pioneer spirit that allows us to continuously dream new dreams and look for new ways to share the love of Christ. It was 127 years ago that St. Luke’s had its very first worship service after the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. When my wife, Marsha and I were newlyweds, we had the opportunity to start a church in Houston. It was scary, exciting and life transforming for us and so many others! We made friendships during that time that will last a lifetime. When you and I look for opportunities to start something, whether it be starting conversation with someone you’ve never met, starting a bible study at work or simply starting a new routine, we carry this same pioneer spirit into all aspects of life!
