“If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.” -James 2:8

Several years ago, I was attending a city council meeting in the small community where I lived. Most of the posted agenda had been accomplished, and it was time for an open microphone for the community. This time is set aside for citizens to ask questions or address concerns to the mayor and city council. I remember a man going to the microphone and stating that he often saw our town fire department leaving the community to help other communities. He wanted the city council to know he did not think that was a good idea. He thought they should stay in our town.

The mayor leaned into his microphone and thanked the gentleman for sharing his feelings. The mayor said, “We help our neighbors in their time of need. That is just what we do.” He also said, “I hope, if we ever need them, that our neighbors would come to help us.”

The Book of James refers to helping our neighbors as “the royal law.” This commandment is based on the law given by the Lord in Leviticus. It is a decree from the highest authority. At the end of this scripture, the decree is signed: “I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:18). It is also a “royal law” because Jesus taught this law over and over. Because Jesus is the King of King, the law he prescribes is no less than “Royal.”

The royal law is love. It brings hope to others. The royal law is compassion. It sees the needs of our neighbors and responds. The royal law has no boundaries. It cares for all, despite our differences. Love acts on behalf of our everyone. As a people of faith, we help our neighbors. That is just what we do!
