The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom, in various forms, that shares gathered insight, leading to a more successful life. The book of Proverbs contains short sayings, poems, and lengthy teachings that teach wisdom and encourage a faithful relationship with the Lord. This collection is designed to function like a class on life. A class that will lead you towards “length of days and years of life and abundant welfare…” (Proverbs 3:2)
Several years ago, I was challenged to read the book of Proverbs. There are 31 chapters in the book, so it makes for a good month of devotional reading. Proverbs contains teaching on many of the most important issues we face daily. This vast collection of wisdom teaches about religion, money, family, work, and so many more topics. It is a worthwhile read for any disciple who is looking to deepen their faith and live a life that reflects the character of God.
I would like to pass this good advice on to you. In your daily devotional readings, add a chapter from the book of Proverbs. Try it for at least one month (31 days). Take notes on the insight you glean from the readings. Many of these are things you already know and put into practice, but I am sure you will find new insight and reminders of wisdom from long ago.
Blessed are those who find wisdom,
those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed. (Proverbs 3:13-18)
Reading the scriptures is an essential practice for a people of faith. It strengthens our foundation and leads us to live a life of deeper faith. The scriptures teach us the story of our faith. They teach us how to live better. In the case of the book of Proverbs and other books, we gain insight that leads to a blessed life.
