“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” -Romans 8:14-15
God has created each of us with the capacity to do good. Through God’s love, we are inspired to make a difference. By God’s grace, we are empowered to work so that others may be blessed. With the presence of God’s Spirit in our lives, we have the freedom to live and serve, just as our Lord Jesus did. We have been created and called to make a difference in our world.
Many years ago, Emma Patterson began her work, changing the lives of children in her community of Montgomery County, Maryland. She has served as a foster mother for several decades. She is a remarkable person who has helped to raise over 40 foster children. Emma Patterson also raised her own four children and helped to raise her ten grandchildren. She is an amazing woman who has blessed so many lives, all as a single mother.
Recently, Emma Patterson was honored by Montgomery County for her extraordinary efforts. She has provided a home and love for so many children who have gone on to live successful and thriving lives. While receiving her special award, Emma said, “It really started with some of my children’s friends not really being taken care of. My children would bring them home and I would just try to give them something to eat and let them have a place to stay. I would just do the best I could to help them a little bit.”
Emma did far more than helping “a little bit.” She has helped establish young people who will now have a chance to have successful lives and families of their own. When we look at Emma Patterson’s life and work, we should be reminded that when we are willing to do something to help others and share our gifts, we, too can live a life that makes a difference.
