“That is impossible.”

This may be the most crippling phrase in our vocabulary. For many reasons we often utter this phrase when faced with a difficult task. Sometimes, it is because the task in front of demands more of our time and effort than we are willing to give. Often, it is because we doubt our skills or our abilities. Other times, it is because we simply don’t have the passion to put in the much-needed work to accomplish a big goal. However, it is a rare thing indeed to encounter something that is truly impossible.

On October 12, 2019, the world saw once again that what seems impossible is often just another challenge that we have yet to overcome. Eliud Kipchoge is an Olympic marathon runner from Kenya. He was competing in the INEOS Marathon in Austria and was running a strong race, keeping up his pace that made him an Olympian.  As he approached the end of the race, officials realized that he was maintaining a pace of 4:33.5 per mile (to put that in perspective, the world record for the fastest one-mile run is 3:43.13… that is just for one mile… Eliud was running 26.2 miles). As Eliud was nearing the finish line, it was clear the world was about to see something special. At the end of this race, Eliud Kipchoge became the first person in history to run a marathon in under 2 hours.

After Eliud completed this historical run, he was asked several questions by the international press. He told ESPN that, “I want to inspire people that no human is limited.” What a remarkable lesson for us all. The limitations that we often focus on are so small compared to the great things that we are capable of accomplishing.

God has created us with the capability to do great things. If we would remember the One who created us and think more highly of God’s wonderful work of creation, we would all realize that Eliud Kipchoge is speaking great truth. We are not limited.
