I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. – Psalm 32:8

I love fishing. I love to try and catch catfish, bass, trout, and several other kinds of fish. That being said, I would not call myself an accomplished fisherman. I have spent a lot more time and money on fishing than I have returned in fish caught. I enjoy fishing, but I won’t have a show on the Outdoor Channel anytime soon. This is probably why I was excited when I received one of the best Christmas presents ever.

My mother-in-law gave the men in the family a great gift of a guided fishing tour down the South Trinity River. We were going to spend two days with a guide who had caught fish worthy of the title, “River Monsters.” His name was Captain Kirk and he was going to boldly take us where we had never been before. We were setting out to catch alligator gar. Captain Kirk holds the world record for the largest alligator gar caught on rod and reel. His record setting fish was 9’ 6” long and 365lbs. We were setting out to catch monsters just like this. This opportunity was at one moment exciting and terrifying. Not only were these fish big, but they had teeth.

We arrived at the dock early that day and set out on our adventure.  Captain Kirk immediately began to teach us about fishing for the prehistoric fish. He demonstrated his equipment, some that I had never seen before, and showed us the secrets to his success. It was not long until we began to reel in fish. It was a tremendous day.  I am glad to say I caught the biggest fish of the trip at just over 100 lbs. it was a great fishing adventure and Captain Kirk made the difference.

Having a guide in the boat with us was truly a gift. He knew the river so well. He had great equipment and knowledge about the fish that lurked in the dark waters. Just like in fishing, having a guide in life can make all the difference in the world. A trusted person who has gone before us, knows the landscape, and is willing to help us navigate to waters of life is so important.

The good news is that we always have a God who is with us and ready to show us the way to go. Sometimes God speaks to us through scripture, and sometimes through other people. God always keeps his eye on us and is ready to show us the way in this bold adventure we call life.
