Psalm 116:1-2
I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. 2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.
Do you think that God hears your voice? I’ll be honest – the concept of the Creator of the universe listening to me – is sometimes too much for me to conceive. The reason I sometimes struggle with the idea is that I can feel that my voice seems too small to reach God in the midst of all that goes on in the world.
But there is one thing that will always help me believe. The last thing I do every night is turn the sound back on for my phone. Most of the day I am in meetings or places where I keep my phone on silent. I started this nighttime ritual a couple of years ago after our daughter Hannah called us one night and I didn’t hear her call. Everything was fine, but I realized that I never wanted to be beyond her reach. I always wanted to be available for her. And that is what helps me believe that God hears my voice as well. For if I, am imperfect person who has made lots of mistakes throughout my life can love my children so much that i always want to be there for them – how much more does the perfect love of God cause God to be there for us?
As hard as it might be for me to believe that God hears my small voice; it is impossible for me to think that I am capable of greater love than God.
God is the source of our ability to love. God helps us to love one another. And we are called to listen to one another and be there for them – in the same way that God listens to us. Don’t be afraid to call – God is always listening.
