Tuesday morning we all got up a little earlier so that we could get an early start at Miss Annie’s house. We got started on the painting and removed an old clothes line so that we could replace it with a new one. Quickly we realized that we need some more supplies, so a few of us took the children down to the swings and slides and played around for a little bit. During the time first time members were able to see the inside of the church. The church in Flowers Bay has a special place in the hearts of just about everyone who has ever been on a team. There is a special feeling in that place that can only be described as “Holy.”
As some members were painting away a new project began. Other team members began working on the new side walk. The group quickly learned that we would not be using “quickcrete” we would have to make the cement the old fashion way. We would be mixing concrete, sand, and water for the new sidewalks. Our team worked for hours trying to make sure that we could complete all our tasks at Miss Annie’s house, and with the help of the children we were able to get it all done.
One of the boys that we met last year was a little guy named Nicolaus. He has been dealing with seizures and struggles with sleeping at nights. The family has been trying to come up with the money to take him to the mainland to have some tests done. As a team we all gathered around him and his mother and prayed for them both. These moments are hard for many of us. We don’t have the answer to solve the issues that they may be dealing with, but we try to make sure we let them know that we can lift them up in our prayers, as well as pray with them at that moment.
One of the local children that we get to see every year decided to chop down coconuts for everyone involved. He showed up to Miss Annie’s house with a burlap sack full of coconuts and a machete. He took the time to cut the tops off them all for everyone to drink the water inside. After that he split them open so that we could enjoy the fruit. This 12-year-old boy is the perfect example of the love that is shared every time we return home…. I mean to Roatan.
