“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe” – Hebrews 12:28
Our journey in life is sometimes complicated by struggles that beyond our control. We want to go from one place to another, but we often need just a little help to get down the road.
It was a cloudy day in Seminole County, Florida when a sudden, heavy rain began. This heavy rain was a blessing to many, except a lady from a local independent living facility who was out on her motorized scooter. To make matters worse, the battery on the motorized scooter was not fully charged. In the middle of rainstorm, with a just over 3/4 of a mile to go, this elderly lady was stranded outside.
Four young men were leaving work, and looking forward to a nice relaxing evening, when they spotted the stranded resident. They knew she needed help, so they continued in the rain to come to her aid. When the young men took a moment to look over the scooter, they realized the only mechanical problem was that the battery was no longer charged. They decided that they only way to return the resident and the scooter to the assisted living facility was to push. The young men took turns. Three of them would push while the other would hold an umbrella over the lady.
It did not take long for them to be spotted. Photos and videos were taken. As they young men returned the lady home, others were expressing their gratitude in person and online. This kind act showed an entire community what it means to be a good neighbor. And the community returned their kindness with gratitude. People flooded social media with their videos and photos. The local and national media was contacted. These young men were celebrated for their kindness.
There are two things that help life’s journey be successful. First, when we see a neighbor in need, we should help. We need each other. Secondly, when we see things that should be celebrated, we should do so. We spend so much time and energy complaining about what is wrong, but when we offer our thanksgiving for the good around us, we are reminded that there is so much more to be celebrated than we often see. Life is a wonderful journey! It is best lived by loving our neighbors and giving thanks for all the good we see.
