James 3:5” likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts”
As I’ve watched the ongoing discourse in our nation, I could not help but think of James 3:1-12. I encourage you to read it today. The images James uses – a bridle, a fire, a ship – are all examples of the way our words can be so hurtful to others. James says we can use our words to praise God but also to curse other people. Then he says, “this should not be.”
We live in world where emails and texts and tweets can be used to share God’s love and bring hope to the world, or they can be used to put people down. Technology is a wonderful tool that can connect us with loved ones far away or say things we would never say in person. How often have each one of us said something and later regretted it! But how often have we taken time for a compliment or word of encouragement? I know I try to keep a mental file of those compliments or encouraging words for a rainy day.
What if we made an intentional effort to use our words to bring glory to God? What if we sought out opportunities to express gratitude, to share kindness or to inspire someone. Those words would surely bring greater joy and happiness to each of our lives! What if we used Facebook and Twitter and email to send loved ones a Bible verse or a quote from a sermon or some other positive word? I’m going to pray that God will give me opportunities to bless someone today with humble words that offer hope! Will you join me?
Prayer: Dear God, please let my words and actions bring honor and glory to you. Help me to find other people who I can encourage today. Amen.
