“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” -Micah 6:8

“Humble and Kind.” That is how Sandy Hawkins described the young man who had the seat next to her on a flight from Denver, Colorado to Jacksonville, Florida. Sandy was traveling alone to her home in Jacksonville. When she boarded the plane, this young man asked if he could help store her bag. When they sat down the young man named Travis was polite and caring. Sandy was happy that her new travel companion was so nice.

Sandy noticed that people kept coming by and talking to Travis. They were telling him “Congratulations” and “good luck.” Sandy finally turned to Travis and said, “Who am I sitting next to? Are you an athlete?” Travis turned to her and said, “I was drafted by the Jags.”

It turns out that Sandy Hawkins was sitting next to Travis Hunter. Travis is the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Colorado. He was an outstanding player for the Buffalos. Travis Hunter was both talented and unique. He played on both offense and defense. A rare accomplishment in modern collegiate or professional football. Travis won multiple awards while in college. He was recently selected second in the NFL draft. With his talent and excellent attitude, Travis is well underway to have a successful career.

When Sandy arrived home, she told her story to her family. She told them she wanted tickets to the Jaguars games and a Travis Hunter jersey. Travis has a new fan. Although Sandy has never seen Travis play, his kindness and humble spirit won her over.

We are all fans of kindness. Our actions and words should express the same loving-gentleness that Christ himself shared. Travis Hunter left a remarkable impression on Sandy Hawkins that day. It is a reminder to us that we all can win at the game of life when we care for others and express kindness to all.
