“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10
When my oldest daughter, Ella Kate, was a little girl she loved to watch the Wiggles. She knew their songs. She loved to dance and sing along with them. She knew ever character in their show. I also knew all their songs and characters. The wiggles were on our T.V. frequently! The wiggles are a children’s musical group from Australia. They stared in 1991 and have performed for millions of children around the world. They have many albums, videos and a successful T.V. show. Although we no longer listen to the Wiggles in our home, they have a special place in our memories.
I once again encountered the Wiggles, but this time they were not singing on my T.V. I was reading about them in the news. The Wiggles received word of a sick young girl at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Sarah Kelly had contracted COVID-19. She was in the hospital but struggling. In addition to her COVID infection, Sara has Down syndrome. The medical staff at the hospital was struggling to get Sarah, who was scared in this unfamiliar environment, to follow their instructions. This was making it difficult to treat her illness.
Steven Moylan was one of the nurses that was assisting in helping with Sarah. Steven noticed that Sarah was always watching the Wiggles on her iPad. So, Steven reached out to see if she could get some help from the world-famous group. It took some time to reach the Wiggles, but when she did the Wiggles went to work. They filmed a song while wearing the oxygen providing equipment that bothered Sarah. The hospital showed Sarah the video and it worked! Sarah was able to receive oxygen and it helped her to be on her way to recovery.
I have always appreciated the Wiggles, but now when I think of this children’s musical group, I will be reminded of a group of people who used their gifts to help to save another person’s life. I will remember nurse Steven Moylan who went beyond his duty to connect Sarah with the Wiggles. I will be reminded that each of us have the ability to see the need of our neighbor, and with a little creative thinking and work, we all can make a difference.
