“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” -Proverbs 1:7

The Book of Proverbs can best be described as a collection of wisdom. It was not written by one person. It is a collection of teachings that impart knowledge and help the reader grow in their character. If a person were to study this significant collection of sayings, they would find several topics that are highlighted throughout the book. Discipline and faith are just two of the many topics covered in this insightful text. The Book of Proverbs encourages many beneficial practices all with the goal of helping a person live a good and successful life.

The first step, and an ongoing practice, to gaining wisdom for a better life is to seek God. This is both a gathering of knowledge about God and seeking a relationship with the eternal Father who created us. It is in the relationship and through grace that God will recreate us into the people He has called us to be.

To grow in our relationship with God takes effort. John Wesley would say that the people who wish to grow in their faith should “attend upon the ordinances of God.” These are the deliberate practices that allow us to connect with God and God’s people. The general practices of God’s people are private and public worship, studying the scriptures, prayer, and the Lord’s supper. When we are methodical about these practices, we will deepen our faith and grow closer to God.

St. Luke’s is currently in a sermon series called Wisdom that Makes a Difference: The Book of Proverbs. The series, like the Book of Proverbs will be filled with practical wisdom that will help us to live a life that makes a difference. The beginning of wisdom is to seek God. Pray, worship, connect with God’s people. This is how we become the people God intends for us to become.
