When a 911 call was made in the small town of Montoursville, Pennsylvania the police and paramedics quickly responded. When they arrived at the small home they found an 84-year-old woman in the midst of a medical emergency. They paramedics quickly assisted her, loaded her into the ambulance and took her to the nearby hospital. The quick response of the emergency personnel helped to save a life.
The life-saving medical response that day was not the only story that took place in that small Pennsylvania town. When the police arrived, they found the woman’s husband, also 84-years-old. Roger Baker was disturbed at his wife’s condition and the fact that they had taken her to the hospital. Mr. Baker was not able to drive, and he did not have any family in the area.
The Montoursville police went above and beyond the call of duty that day and offered the cell phone number of the Deputy Chief Jason Bentley. He told the man that when he was ready to go see his wife, they would be glad to come pick him up and help get him to the hospital.
The job of the first responders was finished when they assisted with the medical emergency. However, the police in Montoursville, Pennsylvania demonstrated that there was more than one way to serve the people of their community. Helping Roger Baker to see his wife of more than 60 years was a true gift to these special people.
To truly serve our neighbors and our community we must listen to their needs. The police in Montoursville took the time to look beyond the immediate need and offered kindness that blessed this family. A photo was captured that showed the police taking Mr. Baker to the hospital. The story of their kindness was shared and his been covered by every major news network. When we have a vision to serve, our work can make a difference in our community and around the world.
