“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” -Colossians 3:15
It is now November, and many high school football teams are preparing for their last few games of the season. The last home game of each season is often celebrated as “Senior Night.” This game is both an important competition and a significant time of celebration. Seniors from the band, cheerleaders, dance, other clubs, and football are recognized for their achievements over the past four years.
At Taft High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, the senior football players have created a way to both enjoy their night and express their gratitude to the teachers who have made an impact on their lives. Each player selects the teacher who has made a difference in their lives over the last four years. They ask that teacher to wear their jersey on the day and night of the game.
When a senior selects their teacher, they take their jersey and a teammate to film the event. They surprise the teacher, offer their gratitude, and present their jersey. It is an emotional moment for the student and the staff member. The positive influence the teachers and staff have on these students will last for a lifetime. The gratitude expressed by these athletes will serve as a reminder to the staff that their hard work makes a difference.
It is important to express our gratitude to the people who have made a difference in our lives. It does no good to keep our appreciation silent. When we let others know how thankful we are, it encourages them to continue their good work. Expressing our gratitude also reminds us that we have been blessed.
Expressing our gratitude is an essential part of our Christian practice. The month of November is an excellent time to be reminded of all we have to be thankful for. Let us take time to write a letter of gratitude, call someone to say, “thank you,” or find another creative way to share with others how thankful we are for the difference they have made.
