“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” -Hebrews 13:16
Alex had a flat tire on her car. It was frustrating and inconvenient. She put her daughter in the car and went to the nearest tire shop. She was prepared to pay for the repair to the flat, but unfortunately, the tire could not be repaired. The people at the shop told her that her tires were bald, and she needed to replace all four tires. It was a matter of safety. The tires were so bad it made her vehicle unsafe to drive.
The news that she needed new tires was unwelcome, to say the least. Alex could not afford new tires. She was frustrated and worried. She did not have the money to buy the tires but did not want to drive her young daughter around in an unsafe car. She had a difficult conversation with the technician. That is when Alex received a tremendous surprise. While she was talking to the employee at the shop, a gentleman, who was waiting on his car, approached and said he would be glad to pay for her new tires. His name is Phil and he simply wanted to help this young mother and her little girl.
Alex was shocked at Phil’s offer. At first, she said, “No. Thank you.” But Phil insisted, and Alex offered her gratitude. Over and over, she said, “Thank you!” Phil was not simply buying Alex new tires; he was offering her peace of mind.
Phil’s generous actions towards Alex and her daughter remind us of the blessings found in helping others. When Phil offered to pay for the new tires, he brought great joy to Alex, himself, and all the staff who witnessed his act of kindness. Alex began her day with a flat tire and ended with four new tires and a renewed sense of hope and joy. When we treat others with kindness and generosity, we can do the same as Phil. We can offer hope and joy to a world that needs good news. We can make a difference.
