“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:16
It is spring time in Oklahoma. The signs are everywhere. The trees are blooming. I have started cutting our grass. The iris and tulips in our yard are beautiful, bringing color to our once dormant landscape. Perhaps the biggest sign of spring is that baseball and softball games are being played all over.
As the 2024 baseball season begins, I am excited to watch the game come alive. I love learning about the players, watching the exciting competition, and enjoying a beautiful day at the ballfield. Recently I read about Paul Skenes, a young professional baseball player, who is about to start his rookie year with the Pittsburg Pirates. Paul made national headlines for all the right reasons.
Paul Skenes is a young baseball star, fresh out of college. In 2022 Paul Skene was awarded the John Olerud award for the best two-way player in college baseball. Last year, Paul pitched for the Louisiana State Tigers. He threw a record 209 strikeouts. He was awarded the 2023 Southeast Conference and the National picture of the year. His tremendous success in college was rewarded when he was drafted first overall by the Pittsburg Pirates. Paul is talented and there is great anticipation for his professional career.
Skenes has been working to become a professional baseball player since he was a child. This year is truly a dream come true. To mark this occasion, Skenes has informed the public that he plans to donate $100 for every strikeout he throws this year. He hopes to donate $100,000 to the Gary Sinise Foundation. Gary Sinise is an actor famous for playing Lt. Dan in the movies Forrest Gump. This foundation helps provide funding to military veterans and first responders. Paul Skenes spent his first two years of college at the U.S. Air Force Academy and has several family members who have served in the armed forces. As he moves towards his dream of being a professional baseball player, he also wants to bless those who are serving and those who have served.
Although Paul Skenes is a rookie, he already understands that true success is not measured by how well you play the game, but how you are willing to use your success to bless others. He has already demonstrated his ability to be a dominant pitcher. Now, Paul Skenes is showing generosity that will allow others to succeed, as well. In the years to come, Paul Skenes will continue to break baseball records, but he will also change lives as he practices generosity.
God has called us all to live a life of generosity. When we give of our time, our talents, and our gifts, we can bless others. A commitment to living a generous life will allow us to share God’s love and bring hope to the world.
