“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” – Ecclesiastes 3:1
In the summer of 2002, my best friend and I took a trip to celebrate graduating high school. One of our stops was New York City. We saw all the sights you are supposed to see in the Big Apple and went to see the musical Rent on Broadway. Outside of a high school production, I hadn’t experienced a musical live on stage, so I was really excited to see my first Broadway show…and it did not disappoint.
The musical Rent tells the story of a group of young artists struggling to find their voice, identity, and purpose in the face of life’s challenges. One of the most poignant songs in the musical, “One Song Glory,” is sung by Roger, a musician who yearns to leave a meaningful legacy through his music.
Roger’s plea for “one song glory” reflects a deep, universal desire to make a lasting impact. He wrestles with his mortality and the fear that he will be forgotten, seeking to create something beautiful and enduring.
As Christians, we often struggle with similar feelings. We want our lives to matter, to contribute something lasting to the world. We may fear that our efforts are insignificant or that our time is slipping away without us achieving what we had hoped.
In Ecclesiastes 3:1, we are reminded that there is a time for everything, and God’s timing is perfect. Our call to impact the world doesn’t always manifest in grand gestures or monumental achievements. Sometimes, it is in the small, everyday acts of love, kindness, and faithfulness that we find our true purpose and leave a legacy.
Like Roger, we might yearn for a big moment of glory, but God often works through our daily faithfulness. Understand that every season of life has its purpose. Depending on what season of life you are in, trust that God is using you right where you are.
