“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” -Proverbs 3:27

Natalia Petosa will be a second-grade student this coming school year. She had a wonderful first-grade year. Like most children her age, Natalia loves her friends and recess. However, school presents different challenges for Natalia than for most of her friends. Natalia was born with Angelman Syndrome, which has many symptoms. For Natalia, mobility requires the use of a wheelchair. Thankfully, the playground at Natalia’s school is accessible by wheelchair. Each day she joins her classmates for recess.

One small problem arises each day on the way to the playground. The sidewalk leading to the playground is flanked by gravel. As the children run and play, gravel gets kicked onto the sidewalk, making it difficult for Natalia’s chair to easily traverse the path. That is where Abel Baxley comes in. Abel is Natalia’s classmate. Each day, Able takes a broom and walks in front of Natalia to clear the sidewalk of any gravel.

Abel Baxley takes time out of his own recess to clear the sidewalks for Natalia. This act of kindness is voluntary and Able does it simply because he wants his friend to be able to have the same access he does. Abel’s work does far more than allow Natalia safely down the sidewalk, it also shows his classmates, teachers and the many other people the difference a kind act can make. Natalia’s mother, April, said, “It makes me feel very happy knowing that he is out there sweeping. It brings joy to Natalia’s day at school.”

We all want to make a difference. The smallest actions can bring joy and happiness to a person. If we take time to look around, we will find rocks to sweep, obstacles to clear for others, and the opportunity to bless someone with the gift of our time and efforts. Kindness is a gift we all can offer the world. With just a little effort we can make a difference.
