“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” –Ephesians 2:10

There have been two extraordinary women who have been Game Changers in my life. One was a pastor in the small western Oklahoma town where I grew up. My family attended another church; however, this pastor loved everyone, and when her church hosted Vacation Bible School, every kid in town wanted to go. When I was ten, she asked if I’d be willing to be the pianist for VBS. I can’t imagine that the quality of my playing was anywhere near acceptable, but she praised my skill and told me how much she needed my help! Her enthusiasm made me feel like I was the best pianist in the world, and she let me know that God had given me that ability to use for His benefit. I was so excited, and my ministry journey began that summer.

When I started learning to play hymns, my zeal for the piano was launched to new heights. I loved learning to play the songs we sang in church, and enjoyed having my mom sing along. I’d practice for hours at home on the old upright, with my mother giving me feedback. I can still hear her hollering from the kitchen, “Susan, that’s not right!” Then she’d hum it to try to help me fix the problem. Mom didn’t play the piano, but she had a great ear for music! She was an encourager, even when correcting me. She was a music lover who enjoyed the hymns, but she also loved the “oldies”…music from the 40s & 50s. It wasn’t long before she bought me the sheet music for those songs she loved, and I learned to love them, too! My family and I enjoyed some great music sessions as I played and we all sang the songs from her youth. My sister and I still love that music!

These two ladies influenced my love of music, helped me hone my skills, and encouraged me to use my gifts for God’s glory! They were Game Changers in my life.

As I’ve worked in Children’s Ministry, it’s been wonderful to see how God has gifted each child for ministry. I pray to recognize their gifts, help them recognize and appreciate their gifts, and to be an encourager.

Sadly, I’ve noticed that many adults have no idea about their own gifts; I’ve even heard some say they have none, but that’s just not true! The very fact that we’re in this world is proof that God has a purpose for us. God has equipped us to serve and make a difference in this world. True joy comes when we use our gifts for His purpose, and it’s my prayer that every person would discover this Game-Changing truth.
