“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” – Hebrews 13:16
In a world that often feels selfish, unkind, and hurried, there are simple acts of love for all creatures great and small happening all around us. The other day I was part of our Friday St. Luke’s caravan of volunteers on our way to our second Mobile Market stop. We were all in a line heading east on 23rd Street by the Capitol building when traffic suddenly came to a stop. Wondering what was happening, I looked out of my windshield to see a man stopping three lanes of traffic and then kneeling on the pavement. He was cupping his large hands around three tiny baby ducks, one of which refused to be corralled and tried to make a break for it. Patiently and gently, he lifted them all to the safety of the median and back in line with their 11 siblings and mother.
This man, driving along and minding his own business, saw a family of God’s creatures who needed help and without hesitation, he stopped his car, put himself in harm’s way to get others to stop, and then knelt to help them to safety.
When I feel like the world doesn’t care anymore, I will look at the photos I snapped that day as a reminder that love and kindness is all around us. All we need to do is look up.
