Aimee and I recently celebrated our anniversary. We took a wonderful trip. While away we visited a lighthouse. It was a beautiful structure constructed on a tall peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The cliffs on either side were steep and rocky. At the bottom of the cliffs, the waves crashed, and the powerful ocean roared. We stood in awe as we overlooked this beautiful site.
We spent some time researching the lighthouse to better understand its purpose and history. Constructed in 1913, the lighthouse helped to guide ships and keep them safely on course. The powerful light could reach 22 miles. It was built before GPS and radio signals, which guide our modern travels. The bright beams of this well-constructed lighthouse brought hope to ships and sailors as they traversed the dark and treacherous seas.
As we drove away from this lighthouse, I could not help but think of the words of the song “My Lighthouse” by Rend Collective. This song reminds us that God is our ever-present light in the darkness.
In my wrestling and in my doubts
In my failures You won’t walk out
Your great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
God‘s word is much like a lighthouse to each of us. Often, we find ourselves living in dark times marked by anxiety, worry, and fear. Through the scriptures, we are reminded, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1) As we try to navigate the unknown path before us, the scriptures remind us that God‘s word is a “lamp for our feet light to our path.” (Psalm 119:105) As the light of God pierces the darkness around us, we find our concerns giving way to hope, and our wayward wanderings being corrected by the gracious light of God’s great love.
It is important for us to spend time in the Scriptures. These holy words remind us that we have nothing to fear in the darkness, for God’s light is brighter still.
In the silence, You won’t let go
In the questions, Your truth will hold
Your great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea,
My Lighthouse, my lighthouse
Shining in the darkness, I will follow You
My Lighthouse, my lighthouse
I will trust the promise,
You will carry me safe to shore (My Lighthouse, Rend Collective)
