Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. -Ephesians 4: 29-32
I’ve had the privilege to watch some amazing teachers in Oklahoma. The ones who stand out the most in my mind are those who have changed the everyday environment of the students they teach. They welcome them into a classroom each day that has a different, higher set of standards than the outside world.
The Western Heights Band program is a particularly wonderful program to witness. Their directors create an atmosphere of love and acceptance every day. Before they perform, their director, Kevin Williams, has a silent moment for the students to prepare themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. He reminds them that they are there, “Not to put each other down, but to lift each other up.” When I first heard him say this, it made my heart warm. So many programs are focused on numbers and competition results. Some programs quickly weed out the weaker players that are supposedly holding the program back, leaving these students by the wayside, feeling unworthy, like outsiders within their own band program.
How are we building up those around us? How are we creating an environment of forgiveness, acceptance, tolerance, encouragement, and love? What are our daily practices, weekly routines, and rituals we have built in to support one another in our different communities?
