“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” -1 Timothy 6:17-19

Kind words can make a big difference in a world that easily gravitates towards the negative. When we share encouraging words and perform intentional acts of kindness toward others, we not only lift their spirits but also set a better example for all. Kindness is powerful motivation. When we are kind to others, we can change situations for the better.

The Kindness911 project is making such a difference in the world. This non-profit organization is helping local law enforcement harness the power of kindness. Through grants and awards, the Kindness911 project encourages “Kindness Officers” to write citations or notices to people they catch doing something positive in their community.

One person who was recently cited by a Kindness Officer was a grocery store employee in Oregon. The employee witnessed a customer who could not afford the groceries in their basket. The employee reached into their pocket and took out enough money to cover the difference so the customer could take all their groceries home.

There is kindness all around us. The Kindness911 project is just helping to highlight the good in our communities. It is not only pointing out the good, but it is also encouraging kindness. This is so important for us to do. Our police officers see so many adverse events on any given day. This helps give them the eyes to see the good, and an opportunity to reward the good around them.

We, too, can be people who demonstrate kindness to our community. We can offer kind words and generous actions to our neighbors. We live in a time when the news highlights the negative around us. Let us step back, look around, and see the good in our midst. If we can’t see something positive and kind, let’s step up and be the kindness we all long to experience.
