“…but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” –Matthew 19:14
When I was a young girl, there were many groups of which I was part that had fundraisers. As a girl scout, I sold cookies. In band we sold crocks of cheddar “cheese” spread and summer sausage. In school we sold light bulbs and magazines. In youth group we had bake sales. I disliked every minute as a salesperson. I always had grand dreams of what I would do with the prizes I would receive with top sales, but would soon remember that sales involved asking people to buy something and I was just too shy.
Today, I understand that there are still a lot of children who are involved in fundraisers and parents/groups encouraging them to be successful. I have discovered that one of my acts of kindness is to never turn down a young child making their pitch. I try to stop at every lemonade stand or bake sale that I see. Part of it is to support the groups, but just as important I want to help these children see that people believe in them.
I would love to tell you that because of my commitment, I have tasted the best lemonade or the most delicious baked goods, but I haven’t. Truth is, lemonade from a stand is typically warm and watered down. I don’t buy with the intention of consuming, I buy with the intention of putting a smile on someone’s face.
When a child is making the effort to sell things, give thought to supporting them. Encourage them with a cheerful disposition rather than a sigh at the inconvenience. You’ll never know how your support might just make their day. Be kind and invest in a young entrepreneur’s life when you encounter them. It might just brighten your day as well!
