“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.” – 1 Peter 3:8
You never know what your neighbor is going through. The person you pass on the street, your co-worker, friend, and even family member may be going through a difficult time. Kindness can truly be a blessing to a person who is experiencing life’s struggles. When we treat our neighbors well, it can brighten their day and perhaps make a difficult time just a little better.
Megan King was working a long shift at a local restaurant when an older lady entered and ordered a meal. Megan was halfway through her 17-hour shift when she took the order. It was a pleasant exchange throughout the meal. There was even a moment when Megan was not busy, and they shared a bit of small talk. Megan returned to work and the older woman paid her bill and left.
When Megan went to collect the money, she found a note that shocked her. The note read, “Thank you for your kind service. This was my first time eating out since my husband passed. I was hoping I could get through it.” The note brought Megan to tears. Megan had no idea that the woman had recently lost her husband. Megan was simply being polite and kind. However, her kindness truly blessed this woman’s life that day.
Each person that we meet deserves to be treated with respect and kindness. This is first and foremost because each person we meet is a child of God. Secondly, we are kind to others because we simply don’t know what they are experiencing in their own life. Kindness helps others find healing and wholeness when other events in life are overwhelming. Megan King brightened a person’s day through her kindness. We too can help others experience healing and joy as we share kindness at work, at home, and anywhere in-between.
