June 30, 2026 – Daily Devotional
Do you ever get in a rut where you just can’t seem to connect with God? Those times when you know you should pray and read scripture and have a daily devotional practice, but you just don’t do it? Candidly…that’s been me recently. I think that is okay to say. I also think there’s an important distinction to be made between lack of faith and lack of connection. Somewhere deep inside of me I feel I can’t admit when God seems far away because that must be some kind indictment on my faith. The truth is that my faith in the Almighty hasn’t wavered, I just have had trouble with connection.
I am usually plagued by an overwhelming need to do things the “right way”. That means that I can easily get in a rut of going through the motions without being even remotely present. Wake up, pray, put on my baptismal cross, read a devotional, go make a coffee, look at my emails, try to remember if I prayed or read a devotional this morning. Once I fall into that pattern enough times, I just decide to skip the prayer and devotional reasoning that if I can’t even remember doing it, then it’s not worth my time. Now I’m disconnected, and I don’t even know what my soul is thirsting for. It’s not a fun place to find oneself.
I recently had a moment of reconnection with God at the lake over Memorial Day weekend. I was sitting outside having my coffee, and I felt this sudden rush of knowing God was there with me. He was in the warmth of the sun that is so far away and yet is such a palpable source of life. He was in the gentle breeze that brings comfort and coolness. He was in every green thing that was growing and blooming around me. When I just stopped trying so hard to be good and connect with God where I thought I ought to look for him, I realized he was everywhere. I just needed to slow down and make some space to see Him.
Once that connection was made again, I found myself in prayer more and thirsting for scripture again. I don’t know why I need to sense God’s presence in order to do the rest, but being cognizant of it helps me know my steps to reconnect.
Remember that God is present in all things at all times. Where can you look for Him when the obvious paths seem closed off to you? Maybe the fear that he isn’t present is making you miss that he is right there. Remember what he told you, “surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
