We all know the fear and worry that happens when the yellow warning light comes on in our car. To say the least, it is inconvenient to take your car to the mechanic. Even worse, the smallest repair can often cost so much. For many families, an unexpected car repair is more than the family budget will allow. This means cars are often driven unsafely, or worse, the family finds themselves without transportation.
The amazing people at Hard Luck Auto in Midwest City know the struggles people can face when their car is broken. That is why they have started a non-profit mechanic shop where they fix cars for free… yes, free. Hard Luck Auto was started by Toni and Adam Ely who had the desire to give back and help their neighbors. Adam would drive his old truck from house to house, fixing strangers cars. If they could afford the parts, he would do the work for free. Over time, they have been joined by two other mechanics. Litahani Shawhan and Monte Hufmann. All four of these amazing mechanics are veterans of the armed services. They have moved from one life of service to another.
Hard Luck Auto has not only fixed countless vehicles around the metro, they have inspired people around the world with their generous spirit. They have been highlighted on multiple news channels like KFOR, News 9, the Washington Post, and the BBC. They were recently featured on Mike Rowe’s new show “Returning the Favor.” With this appearance, they were given the gift of an actual shop for two years where they can continue their amazing work. It is amazing to see all the good that is happening because of the loving work of the people of Hard Luck Auto. Everyday people are receiving much-need repairs, and others are being inspired to give back to help a neighbor in need.
We each have gifts that make a difference in our neighbor’s lives. We can share God’s love when we see a need and use our skills to make a difference. You might not be able to fix a car, but maybe you can fix a meal, mow a lawn, write a card, or help a virtual student with homework. There are countless ways to share God’s love with our neighbors. Each of us has been blessed with so much. Let us now look to the needs of those around us and share God’s love by giving back to those in need.
