Daily Devotional – June 10, 2026
When I was 8 years old, I was given my very own “FaithGirlz! Bible” as a gift for my baptism. It was purple and white with lots of flowers surrounding the front and back covers, and it had a “This Bible Belongs To” page to fill out inside. I remember being so excited to write my name and other information in it. One of the prompts read “Favorite Bible Verse”, and I wasn’t sure what to write. I didn’t know I needed one of those! So instead of leaving it blank, I did what any 8-year-old would do and quickly skimmed through the book, opened to a random page, and highlighted a verse I thought sounded especially wise. I found my way to 2 Corinthians 4:18
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (NIV)
I’m not sure why this verse initially caught my young, unassuming eye, but it sure has followed me through life in a profound way.
The first half of the verse has been a constant reminder to check-in with myself on where I’m centering my gaze. Am I striving toward earthly success? Or am I pursuing a closer walk with Thee? Am I getting bogged down by life’s stress and fear? Or am I lifting my eyes to where my help comes from?
The second part of the verse helps me remember that whatever trial I’m facing is temporary. Any pain, or sorrow, or anger, or hopelessness seen in this life shall be no more in God’s gift of eternal life.
In seasons of doubt, this verse reminds me I’m not intended to “see”. I’m not meant to fully understand or fully grasp who God is, where God is, or how God is. I am not meant to have every question answered. I am meant to fix my eyes on what I can’t see, to embrace the mystery of the divine. To trust His certainty through my uncertainty. It’s quite a paradox, but it allows for the nuances of human feelings and the ebb and flow within our relationship with God.
Though His presence cannot be physically seen, God has always been a safe place for me to run, a soft place to land. I hope with the reminder of 2 Corinthians 4:18, He can be that for you, too.
