“You make known to me the path of life;
You will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” – Psalm 16:11
Summer is a wonderful time of the year. The warm temperatures and sunny skies seem to invite us to new and exciting adventures. When I was young, my friends and I spent our days riding bikes to faraway places. We would explore new neighborhoods, fish in ponds, and enjoy the journey. Now, as an adult, I love taking my family on summer trips. It is good to go to new places and see all the wonders of God’s beautiful creation.
As I think of adventure, I am reminded of Dr. Kathy Sullivan. No adventure is too big or too far for her. Dr. Sullivan is a geologist by training. She has had a distinguished career, including serving as the Charles A. Lindbergh Chair of Aerospace History at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Life in the Smithsonian is a blessing, but Dr. Sullivan’s adventures would take her far beyond those walls. Dr. Sullivan’s first great adventure came as a NASA astronaut. She was selected to be part of NASA’s first class of female astronauts in 1978. She flew on three Space Shuttle missions and made history as the first woman to walk in space.
Dr. Kathy Sullivan’s adventures did not stop when she returned to Earth. She had many other passions and was willing to go to great heights or depths to explore them. She has always had a passion for the ocean. After her successful missions for NASA, Dr. Sullivan boarded the Limiting Factor, a deep submersible. Dr. Sullivan traveled to the bottom of Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench. After completing her trip, Dr. Kathy Sullivan became the first person in history to travel to the deepest point on earth and to outer space. What an adventure!
We truly live in wonderful times! There are so few limits on our travel, our experience, and our adventures. We must look to find ways to be adventurous. We were created to live life to the fullest. Our God-given imagination causes us to look to the stars or the vast ocean. What adventure lies ahead of you? Go somewhere new, try something for the first time. There is a joy that is found when we look beyond our limitations and seek a new adventure. Adventure is good for the soul!
