I enjoy most music genres. Growing up as the youngest child in the 50’s, I was often used as one of my sibling’s dance partner on Saturday mornings. We were supposed to be cleaning house, but when one of their favorite songs came on the radio or when American Bandstand came on television, cleaning was put on hold to dance! Then it was the music of the 60’s, peace, love and flowers. They were songs we loved, and they always related to another person, situation or world problems.
In worship, I am partial to the hymns so many of us grew up with; Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, and so many more. The words are powerful and truly speak to me. Like certain Bible verses, music has a way of making me feel closer to God. I recently attended a gathering of clergy and communion was served to a violin playing Down to the River to Pray. There was a soloist singing the beautiful words to this beloved song. That time was one of the most moving communions I have had.
I feel music feeds our souls regardless of the genre. Whether you’re singing along, dancing, praising our God, or whatever the case may be. Who can’t help to tap their foot, put a smile on their face or sing along with the songs we love? I hope today you will take a moment, put on some of your favorite music, give thanks to God for the gift of song, and enjoy the beauty and joy that comes from the songs we love.
