“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” -Hebrews 4:12
We recently bought a new can opener for our kitchen. It is nothing special. This is not life-changing news for our family. It only cost a few dollars. However, it is a welcomed utensil to our kitchen. When we need to open a can, it does the job!
Our previous can opener lasted several years and opened countless cans. It had seen better days, for sure. It had become dull. Opening a simple can of soup or tomatoes had become far more challenging than it should. Each turn of the handle required superhuman strength. We tolerated the dull tool for a long time but ultimately, we purchased a replacement, and life is better in our kitchen.
I was helping with dinner the other night and had a chance to use the new can opener. I thought about how big a difference the sharp blade made. As we were making dinner, I was reminded of the scripture that reads, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” I was reminded that the kitchen is not the only place for sharp instruments. Our soul needs the help of a sharp tool, as well.
Reading the scriptures opens our hearts, minds, and souls to God. The Bible is a sharp and powerful tool that allows God to speak directly to us. I have been reminded of this as we continue our year in the Bible. The scriptures offer us strength, peace, and challenge, as we gain insight into who God is and who God created us to be. The Bible is the sharp instrument of God that opens us to God’s great love and grace. Not only is God’s word sharp enough to work in us, but it also sharpens us to do God’s work in the world.
