An intelligent mind acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. Proverbs 18:15

Just before arriving at the event I thought I was catching a cold. My throat was scratchy. It was not enough to deter me from attending Chrysalis. I packed my bag and traveled with my friend and his family to the retreat. Within the first few hours of attending the event I lost my voice. I had caught a case of laryngitis.

I spent the next three days in silence. For a person who loves to talk, this was a challenging weekend. With no voice, my only real option was to listen. I listened to the talks, I listened to the discussion around our table, and I listened to the music during worship. I listened all weekend.

It was on the last night of this event, during a time of prayer, I received my call into the ministry. My life has not been the same since God spoke to me and invited me to serve Him.

God speaks to His children in many ways. The lesson I learned that weekend is that I am often not quiet enough to listen to God. I am grateful for that brief illness that took my voice during Chrysalis. I have no doubt my silence provided God the opportunity to speak to me.

I want to encourage you to intentionally listen for God during this Advent season. Find some time to grow still, become silent, and listen for God’s voice. The same God who spoke to Joseph and Mary, the same voice that called out to Zechariah and Elizabeth is still speaking today.
