When your baby takes their first steps, it is one of the most magical times in a family’s life. It brings great joy to a parent as they watch their child take such a momentous step. Parents work so hard to encourage their children and when that moment comes, they cherish it. They cheer with great jubilation. Most importantly, they keep their camera or phone nearby so they can capture the moment.
Recently, Jim McKay, a young filmmaker in Austin, Texas, took a trip to his local thrift store. He was looking for some cheap supplies and props for his next project. One of the things he purchased was an old TV with a built-in VCR. He put the TV in his garage where it sat for some time. One day, Jim went to see if the TV actually worked. He discovered a tape in the VCR. Out of curiosity, he pressed play. What he discovered was a tape of that special moment as a family witnessed their baby’s first steps.
Jim knew this was a video that the family would want. He took to social media to search for the family. It did not take long until they were located. Soon, Jim met the Alexander family in person, including 28-year-old Tyre, the baby in that old video. Jim returned the tape to a deeply grateful family.
The two families are now friends. It all started because Jim realized that the video was a record of a special moment. He went out of his way to reconnect the family with this long-lost recording.
When we realize that others are in need, we must go out of our way to help. It may seem like a simple thing to return a video, but to the Alexander family, they were reunited with a treasure. This is what it means to be a neighbor. When we see someone in need, we offer what we have to make a difference. We see their needs and we meet their needs. Because Jim McKay was willing to be a good neighbor, he created a special moment while reminding the Alexander family of yet another special time.
How can you be a good neighbor today?
